Holiday World officially kicked off another season of Holidays in the Sky, and once again it proved why this has become one of my favorite summer traditions at the park. I make it a point to attend opening night every year, and even though I know to expect a fun evening, there is always something special about seeing how Holiday World changes things up from season to season.
This year’s opening night had a lot going on all at once. It was the final weekend of Rubber Duck Days, it was Father’s Day Weekend, and it was also the first night of Holidays in the Sky for the season. Because of that, the park was very, very busy. Crowds were heavy throughout the day, and lines for attractions were long at different points, though they did become a bit more manageable at times. With the heat and humidity added in, you could definitely tell it had been a long day for some families by the time evening rolled around.
Still, even with the crowds, the park had that unmistakable summer event energy that makes Holiday World feel different on nights like this.
Once the Neon Nights DJ Dance Party got going, you could really feel the excitement building. That was the point where it truly started to feel like more than just another busy day at the park. Guests were ready, the atmosphere picked up, and there was a strong sense that everyone was waiting for the big finale of the night.
This year, I watched the show from a new location that I do not normally use. I sat in the bench seating area set up near the viewing zone for the drone show. I liked the view overall, and it was nice to experience the event from somewhere different, but being that close did make it a little harder to take photos and video the way I normally would. Even so, I was glad to try a new vantage point.
The drone portion of the show had several standout moments for me this year. I really liked the large character displays that appeared throughout the presentation, and the scale of some of the formations was impressive. The crowd especially seemed to react when the drone images went from smaller shapes to much larger, more dramatic designs. Another nice touch was the inclusion of USA-themed icons throughout the show in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. Those moments got a noticeable response from the audience and added another meaningful layer to the experience.
What I thought was especially unique this year was Holiday World working with the band Happy New Month to sing a new song written by Holiday World that is in the drone show this season. That gave the presentation an extra layer of personality and helped make this year’s version feel even more customized to the park.
The music throughout the show did a great job matching the mood of each scene. Some parts felt exciting, some felt emotional, and others simply felt fun. Holiday World did a really good job pairing the soundtrack and sound effects with the visual moments happening in the sky. That helped make the overall presentation feel even more memorable.
As for the fireworks, that portion did seem a bit shorter to me this time around. With that said, Holiday World appeared to spread more fireworks moments throughout the full show this year, so that may be why the final fireworks section itself felt shorter. Even so, the fireworks were still a strong part of the presentation and worked well alongside the drones instead of feeling separate from them.
One thing I have always liked about Holidays in the Sky is how it acts as the perfect sendoff to a full day at Holiday World. After a long day of rides, food, shows, and family fun, this event really does feel like a final goodnight before heading home. It is something guests of all ages can enjoy together, and that is part of what makes it such an important part of the park’s summer lineup.
Holiday World has clearly found a rhythm with this event over the years. At this point, they have really mastered the overall flow of Holidays in the Sky. Crowd control seemed a bit better this year, and the event itself still feels polished and well put together.
If there is one thing I would like to see improved, it would be adding a little more party lighting or neon-style effects near the bench viewing area before the show starts. That spot feels a little isolated compared to the rest of the event atmosphere, and a few added lights or pre-show effects could make guests in that section feel more connected to the party happening elsewhere.
Even with that, Holidays in the Sky remains something I believe families should absolutely make time to see this summer. Between the music, the dance party atmosphere, the drone formations, and the fireworks, it all comes together to create a memorable end to the day.
This opening night also made me excited to come back and experience it again later in the season. Next time, I would actually like to watch the full show without worrying so much about recording or taking photos, and just enjoy it for what it is.
